Activa 'To the Point'
This November's T.I. seems to be something of a month for second helpings of trance artists’ albums. One of the first and foremost thoughts that pops into the front of a fans brain when sizing up prospects for a debut's follow-up is ‘will it have changed stylistically?’ and ‘if so, by how much??’
Two years back Activa’s ‘This World’ presented a high-octane trance vision and became the irresistible force in getting engines turning on his deck career. Catalyst that it was, its probably little surprise that (to the greater degree) Rob Stevenson’s chosen not to change too much up when it came to the decidedly club orientation of his sophomore long-player. ‘To The Point’ is, indeed, just that. The first track on a trance album istypically the preserve of the chillout/intro piece. In a clear statement of intent to the faithful though, ‘My Way Out’s got drums (angelic) vocals and a whole helluva lot more besides! From the tough but trance-progressive vistas of ‘For What We Have Lost’ to melodic/harmonic set-pieces like ‘Daydreaming’ and the awesome, hypnotizing ‘Stronger’ (which features flavour-of-the-month Julie Harrington on vocals), the album soars.
Throughout these subtler, more nuanced tracks though your sixth sense will tell you there must be some roof-rippers round the corner. When they come in the latter half of the album, they rain heavy. Tracks like ‘Heads Down’, Telic (Parts 1 & 2) and ‘Access’ (with Will Atkinson) are high on horsepower club conquerers that are and out to put as many boots on the dancefloor as they can!
